This has absolutely nothing to do with manga or anime, but I was assigned to do a visual basic project on the "top 5 greatest video games that are fun and educational and were breakthroughs of their time" (honestly, can't the title be just a taaaad shorter?!), and it got me thinking about all those games I played when I was younger. ^^ Yes yes, being on the verge of 18, I'm not that old but it feels like the games I played when I was six (gosh...for some reason, I keep thinking that anyone under 12 year olds are still really really young and incapable, even though when I was 10 I became a Community Leader at Geocities by pretending I was 21...hmmm ^^**) were *extremely* different and outdated compared to the 3D real-time games we have today.

Soooo I thought maybe it would be fun to talk about the computer games we all played when we were little, and when the graphics were 8-bit sprites. ^^**

My first computer game was some dumb caveman arcade-style game (walk, hit the dinosaur with your axe, walk walk, hit another, jump, walk...) and my second one was the Mario Brothers game on the Famicon. (er...that thing that came before the Super Nintendo ~.^ )

I played my favorite game when I was 8 though, and it's still one of my favorites. "The Legend of Kyrandia"...anyone heard of it? I could rave about it all day! (especially on the second game of that series)

It's really strange, but I remember all the aspects of those old games (music, voice, gameplay, story, etc.) 10 x better than I remember the new PS2 games I've played. I also liked those games a lot better too! I don't know why, but it seems that as the graphics of games get better and better, the gameplay and storyline tend to degrade further and further. -__-

Some other games I remember really loving: Oregon Trail (is there anyone who *hasn't* played this?!), Super Solvers series (Gizmos and Gadgets, Midnight Rescue, etc....all incredibly educational and fun ), Monkey Island (#2 I think...), Red Alert...

*bawls* I really really miss all the old games!

Whoo wrote a lot here. I'm a pretty big oldie computer/video game buff. ^^** (Now I'm downloading them and using emulators to play them XD ) How do you guys/gals feel about video games you used to play some time ago? Got any special favorites you want to rave about? I'm all ears! (er...eyes actually...)

- Crisis

Oh! And if anyone is remotely interested, this is my "beta" list for the "top 5 greatest video games that are fun and educational and were breakthroughs of their time":

1) Super Solvers
2) Super Mario SNES (problem solving is educational...............right?)
3) Harvest Moon
4) Sim Ville (without this, The Sims would never have been made. ahhh beautiful game)
5) Xenogears (I couldn't resist. This is the best game ever. I just had to include it)

Yes yes, I'm going to have to do lots of BS for four of those games.

I'm old enough to remember the days when the most popular game console was made, not by Nintendo, but by Atari--although my family had a Colecovision instead. I also have distinct memories of playing purely text-based games, like Scott Adams' Adventureland, on a VIC-20, when I was about eight years old myself. I was in high school by the time Nintendo was becoming popular in North America.

And I think you're right about the quality of the storylines and such in the games deteriorating--the average quality seems to have peaked shortly after the end of the eight-bit era, IMHO, and it's been gliding gradually downhill ever since, as the big companies choose style over substance--or then again, I may just be an old fogey seeing my youth through rose-coloured glasses. And besides, the last console I bought was the SNES. All the new games I've played since they stopped making new cartriges for that have been PC-based, or PC ports of console games . . .

Oddily enough, I remember Ninetedio, but then again, Super Mario Brothers were created the year I was born..... >.>

The FIRST game I ever played was Super Smash Mario Brothers.....interesting.... hehe. I was only four or five at the time. Whee.

Oregon Trail! I LOVED that game! We used to play it on the school computers back in 5th or 6th grade. We would name the people after classmates and see who would die first XD And I remember you could buy bullets and go to a scene where you could shoot animals for food. Like the Buffalo, rabbit, deer, squirrels.

Another game I liked was Duck Hunt....you played it on Nintendo and you have this orange remote control gun that you shoot the TV screen with...(what's with me and these shooting games 0_o;; )

On Super Nintendo my favorite game was Secret of Mana, and the Mario game where you can have those different colored Yoshi.

I've never owned a Sega (Although I like to play the Sonic games ^^) or any of the new ones like PS2, xBox, dreamcast, etc.

Another game in school we got to play was called Word Munchers (Or Number Munchers if you were playing the Math version of the game) You have this little green guy on a grid with words/numbers in the boxes. If the topic was "Kitchen Utensils" you'd have top go and eat all the words that were kitchen tools. Or in the math one you might have to eat multiplys of 5.

Erk...I've made this longer than I ment to...Crisis has me re-living my childhood!
::sneaks off to go buy an Oregon Trail game for her computer::

Well there are actually a lot of games I have played....like for Nintendo I remember playing Mario, Zelda, Duck Hunt, of course and this one game where you are the air ship and you have to kill other air ships...I don't remember what it is called -__- but I also played some other games that I don't remember the name too >___<

I have also played Games on the computer.Umm...this was before I got the internet and may I say my computer was really crappy back then -.-;; But anyways I played this one game where you where a worm and you had to try and avoid these dots or this thing that would come at you....I am really sorry I can't remember the names of these games -____- but this was back when I was like 5..... am I even making any sense...but let me tell you I have played so many old games ^^;;;

Umm...I have also played on the Super Nintendo, I actually only have 3 games for that console. I think they are Zelda, Star wars and Mario I think it was called Super Mario or somethink like that. It had yoshi in it though >.<

I have also played on the Sega Genesis. On there I have played all the 1st and 2nd sonic, the 1st and 2nd mortal Kombat, the lion King, Batman, and a wrestling game....why I have the wrestling game beats me.....I think that is my cousins LOL.
Umm..I also have played recent games on the Nintendo 64, playstation, and the playstion 2 ^^;;;

But the games I really love right now are Shinobi, Hack infection and also Xenogears ^____^ sad to say that Xenogears only came to my town like a month ago along with Hack infection -____-;;;;

Hmmm...does anyone remember playing any of these old games that I have played ^^;;;
Hehe I could go on with my list but I think I will stop.....

WOW I didn't know I have played some many games before, and own so many of them 0_o
I wonder how much money I would have if I didn't have all these games. Hmmm....imagine the Mangas I could buy with all the money I would have ^____________^
I would be in happy land forever *______*

Yeah, I remember all my favourite old games too. But i think that my favourite games were actually on the SNES. Yeah, I played all the games that my parents could rent (ha ha, we didn't have enough money to buy a lot of games, just the ones you get with the system and ones we got from my cousin). I think I liked all the Mario games, like Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars (except when you beat the Mario 3 game you didn't get all those P-wings, but oh well). I liked yoshi's Island and Mario RPG, and Mario Kart. Also I loved the Zelda game, and Donkey Kong Country, among others. Yeah, but then we got the N64, and I liked fewer games, like Zelda, and a few other games, and then the PS, even fewer games, a few FF games, and then PS2, and well pretty much the same ones I liked for PS except I liked the FFX game. Mostly I liked adventure games and problem solving games and RPGs though, not much of those fighting games, or racing games that usually got old really fast for me.

Who would've thought I'd find a threat to actually reply to here

ok, best games of all times...err.. of OLD times... here they come (in no particular order)

- Xenon - Megablast 1
(the godfather of all 2D-Shooters)
- Turrican I+II
(for Amiga and PC)
- Double Dragon
(was never released in europe for a GOOD konsole, had to play it in the arcades)
- Ultima Underworld I
(the very best first-person rpg up to the present day)
- Budokan
(WAAAAAY before Mortal Kombat made martial-arts games a series of special-moves, this was the grand-grand-grand-etc-daddy... REALLY realistic, had some 2000 moves or so)
- Golden Axe Warrior
(on the Sega Master System II, my very first console)
...
oh well, could name a couple more, but those I played till my fingers bled

I have a suggestion. This might be considered something of a stretch in terms of educational value, and might even be too recent. But anyway, I think Half Life desrves a spot. The biggest way this game was educational was in of the fact that it was an education for many people who have gone into the world in various computer specialties (modeeling, coding, 2d art, etc) as a direct result of this game. At the very least the game was revolutionary in of the fact that the approach used by the it's creator (valve software) created a model of production and support that set the standards by which all future games are judged.

Half life? Hmm...never played it, but I've seen the box sitting in my brother's room before. It looked like a counterstrike type game though, which is the kind of game I try to avoid. ^^

Carole - Ahhh Oregon Trail and Number Munchers were on our school computers too! And we also named the people after our friends to see who died first. (hehe...) I kept playing that game until I got to be a Banker. Oh, and might I add that I was the worst player in Number Munchers ever. I'm incredibly slow at math (always was, always will be) and it took me forever to figure out what a factor or multiple of so-and-so was. ^^

Hehe...talking about old games and doing a project on them is really making me want to play them again. I'm downloading what I can off the net right now. ~.^

Yaoi Manga Girl - have you played Xenosaga episode 1 then? It's *nothing* compard to Xenogears, but I'm going to play all the Xenosaga episodes anyways just so that I understand the storyline that led up to Xenogears. ^^ It's very cool to see the puzzle pieces of one big storyline fall into place through the course of five (or was it six...) games.

Hmm...has anyone noticed that female main characters in RPG games are getting more prominent these days? I'm a bit of a feminist, but I still prefer the games with male main characters. The girls tend to be...incredibly annoying. (And anyway, I like my main character to be a powerhouse, but the female main characters tend to be more into magic or defense. ;__

Oh yes! Does anyone remember the old word processing programs before MS Word was made? I remember that it was this ugly green screen with white text on it. :P There was also a similar math program where you drew shapes using a turtle...er...I'm sure some of you must remember using that. ~.^
